In the past, boudoir photography was considered somewhat scandalous… but today’s women are redefining their sexuality and how it’s expressed, delighting in creating sensual portraits of themselves to share with their intimate partners, but there’s more to this popular trend than that. Boudoir photos today are being created by women for women.

The art form has come a long way from it’s furtive beginnings. The word boudoir comes from the French verb bouder, meaning to sulk and was used to describe a woman’s sitting or dressing room or adjacent to the bedroom where one could withdraw in private for various activities… In the 1920 boudoir photography was a social taboo largely considered disgraceful and the act of taking or possessing nude photos was even illegal during the prohibition era. During the 1940’s the art form became more accepted as pinup girls were used as propaganda to solicit young men into the military during WWII and Hollywood glam took the world by storm.

Since then women’s sexuality is largely in the open yet women often think that women must posses particular personality and physical characteristics to look sexy in photographs. Challenging this limiting mindset is at the heart of modern boudoir photography. The value of the art form today is in showcasing the beauty, strengths, and sensuality of real every day women in all their glory!

Boudoir photography today is for every woman who wants to be the muse and see herself as a work of art, where the woman can choose how she wants to be seen and express herself. The boudoir genre is used by women to boost confidence, to appreciate their own unique sensuality and femininity. It’s about women loving their bodies, feeling their value, and pleasing themselves as well as their partners. Boudoir is a safe outlet where real women of all sizes and ages can feel great about themselves and have fun at the same time.

Each session is an experience, a process of self-discovery and awareness where my subjects can explore and express their own strengths, vulnerabilities, and sensualities, which is extremely empowering. I want women to feel beautiful and sexy when we’re finished and to remember that feeling every time they look at their photos.

Boudoir Photographer Jen Rozenbaum says it perfectly: “I’m photographing their strengths, and they’re releasing their own personal power.”
