I have always believed that the pregnant woman is beautiful no matter where she is so, whatever backdrop you decide on you can’t go wrong! In-studio maternity portraits or on-location pregnancy portraits can both be amazing, different – yet equally amazing. It really comes down to your personal preference firstly and secondly whether one or the other can tell your story or emulate your character better than the other. Some women know automatically how they want to be portrayed in their maternity portraits but, if you’re on the fence and having trouble deciding what would be the best fit for you, I’ve put together a list of things you should consider to help you make-up your mind:

Studio photography vs On-Location pregnancy photos. What’s your preference?
  1. Studio Shoot:   Some people are just more comfortable indoors that they are in the great outdoors. Like deciding where you want to give birth – you should be where you feel most comfortable.  In the studio we can control the environment. You’ll have more privacy making it great for shooting tasteful nudes and we won’t have to worry about weather or whether anyone is watching or photobombing our background. The studio also offers a variety of lighting options to create different moods and backdrops.
  2. On-Location: Have a location on-island that is meaningful for you? Then an outdoor backdrop may be the best option for you.  There’s something about putting a pregnant woman in a beautiful nature scene that makes magic and if you want to portray your pregnancy in a natural environment you have endless options here on Oahu. Generally, I like to shoot with minimal lighting equipment for outdoor photoshoots relying more on the natural light of the early morning or sunset hours. This is when the sunlight is soft and flattering. I also love to incorporate water into outdoor pregnancy portraits photographing subjects in calm waters.  (Depending on your level of comfort I’m also open to tasteful nudes in nature too.)  Just be aware that outdoor shooting can sometimes require location back-up plans or rescheduling due to weather limitations. Otherwise, sky is the limit.
  3. Cost: If this is a big issue for you an indoor studio shoot costs a little less than on-location shoots due to additional time needed for travel and set-up. If it’s not an issue we can even customize a package to do both!

Hope these suggestions help in the decision making for your pregnancy portraits . If you have more questions don’t hesitate to reach out, I’m happy to discuss and open to requests! CONTACT
